THOMPSON'S STATION, Tenn. (WKRN) — Thompson's Station has a traffic and parking problem, and they're unveiling a plan to address it next week.
According to town officials, the open house is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 7, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Tollgate Village Clubhouse. The meeting will discuss the Tollgate Boulevard roundabout's traffic calming improvements as well as the neighborhood parking plan.
Attendees can come and go as they please during the two-hour session, asking whatever questions they need during the open house.
The idea, according to town officials, is to promote safety in the community.
"About a year ago, we got some community complaints related to safety," Town Administrator and Town Planner Micah Wood told News 2.
The complaints centered on traffic issues like speeding and parking on both sides of the street in the Tollgate Village neighborhood, a mixed-use development in the northern part of town that allows for plenty of pedestrian traffic.
"People are speeding through Tollgate Boulevard and causing concerns for pedestrians," Wood said.
Tollgate Village also abuts the property Independence High School calls home, meaning walkers and bikers frequently traverse the roads on their way to and from school.
The two issues prompted town officials to look into ways to deter speeders in the neighborhood, according to Wood.
According to Project Manager Susan Steggenhagen, the town is now at the point where they have specific improvements in mind and want to hear from the community on their proposals.
"We're at the point where we want to solicit feedback in a few different ways," she told News 2. "We will have our main in-person opportunity at the Tollgate Village Clubhouse. People can come and learn about these proposed improvements—both the parking plan and the roundabout pedestrian improvements—and they can also get feedback in real time at that meeting."
If they can't come to the meeting, residents also have the ability to leave questions or comments online through the city website. Residents can opt to email Steffenhagen directly or fill out an online form with their comments or concerns.
"I know for us a big priority is to hear from individual people that are living and working in Tollgate and try our best as staff to balance the need for greater safety improvements on the whole, but also hearing individual needs and preferences and striking that balance as best we can," Steffenhagen told News 2.
