NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Elon Musk's tunnel-building company, The Boring Company, is now hiring for the Music City Loop.
The underground tunnel will run from downtown to Nashville International Airport, with the goal of alleviating traffic congestion.
"I'm really excited about this project," Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee said.
In downtown Nashville, the first dig for the tunnel was made in mid-August. Now, as of Sep. 1, there is a large hole, showing the progress of the project.
"They (Boring Company) have a great desire to follow the process as laid out by the state and to work with our agencies," Lee said.
Music City Loop is bringing jobs to Nashville. The Boring Company is currently searching for engineers, electricians, mechanics and operation coordinators among other positions.
Gov. Lee said it's the fast lane to the city's future.
"We've been trying to find ways, Metro Nashville has in particular, to develop transit in the city for a long time," Lee said. "It costs billions and billions of dollars to build out transit systems. We now have an opportunity to have a transit system that costs the taxpayers nothing."
While it may not be costing taxpayers anything right now, Nashville resident Taylor John said it's costing her peace.
"I have a lot of concerns, first of all, by how fast this decision was made, I don't think there was a lot of discussion from the members of the community before this decision was made," John said.
John also raised concerns around the project catering to tourists and the environmental harm it could bring.
"It's going to impact us," John said.
Gov. Lee is defending The Boring Company's efforts.
"They understand fully the permitting, environmental permitting, road permitting, all of that is part of the process," Lee said.
Meanwhile, other Nashville residents said the Music City Loop is an innovative way to transform transportation.
"There's a whole untapped potential underneath, underneath our feet," Nashville resident Nathaniel Lehrer said. "Anything that can save time when picking up family or friends or you need to catch a flight, it'd be an awesome option to have."
