KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) -- The University of Tennessee wasted no time to replace head baseball coach Tony Vitello after his departure to the San Francisco Giants.

Just three days after Vitello's announcement, the school announced it's hiring Josh Elander, who has been under Vitello's staff since the beginning of his tenure.

“From the outset of this national search, Josh emerged as the undeniable top choice,” said Tennessee Director of Athletics Danny White. “His relentless commitment has helped transform Tennessee baseball into a powerhouse, and we are proud to have him as our next head coach on Rocky Top. His influence inspires excellence in every aspect of our program and we look forward to continuing our quest for championships on the diamond under Josh’s guidance!”

Elander spent the past eight years as an assistant coach, and the last three seasons as an associate head coach.

During his time on Rocky Top, Elander has worked primarily with the team's hitters, while also serving as the team's recruiting coordinator and third-base coach. Under his leadership, the Vols have been one of the country's top offensive teams season after season.

Over the last eight seasons, the Vols have made six NCAA tournament appearances, five straight NCAA Super Regionals, and three trips to the Men's College World Series, winning it all in 2024. During this span, Tennessee has set multiple program, SEC, and NCAA records, along with winning four SEC Titles.

Elander is also one of the best recruiters in college baseball, as Tennessee has picked up back-to-back No. 1 classes for 2024 and 2025.

“I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity here on Rocky Top,” said Elander. “I’m really happy for our players to continue building on what we’ve already built here. The hunt continues, and we’re still excited. Love this place and these people. So thankful for the best that’s yet to come.”

White and Elander will hold a media availability on Monday, Oct. 27 at 11:30 a.m. ET.
