NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — An investigation into a social media account that helped to organize "riotous" car meetups has led to the arrest of an 18-year-old in Nashville.
According to court documents, the Metro Nashville Police Department launched an extensive investigation into an Instagram account that posted advertisements for car meetups and videos of dangerous driving stunts that allegedly took place in Nashville.
Maycol Castaneda Orellana was booked into Metro jail on Monday, accused of being the account's owner. Court documents said Orellana played a central role in organizing, promoting and participating in at least one car meetup in Antioch.
Officials said during the investigation, the account posted an advertisement for a car meet on Cane Ridge Road, leading the MNPD Traffic Division to initiate a "street racing enforcement operation" on Aug. 16.
Dash camera footage from an officers' patrol vehicle reportedly showed a crowd of people in a parking lot standing close to vehicles performing donuts and other driving stunts.
The operation led to a multi-county pursuit involving a Dodge Charger that was seen doing donuts at the meetup. The 19-year-old driver surrendered himself to officers after his vehicle was disabled by spike strips, and he was jailed on seven charges.
Messages recovered from Orellana's Instagram account reportedly discussed him being in the Charger with the suspect during the event and at the start of the pursuit. His account also posted photos of the Charger at the Cane Ridge Road meetup location.
Orellana was charged with misdemeanor and felony rioting. No additional information was immediately released.
