NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — One concerned Old Hickory resident expressed her frustration over litter in the area after collecting more than 12 bags of trash.

Jane Schnelle lives in Old Hickory. She joined Metro Councilmember Jordan Huffman's neighborhood group to help pick up trash at the Stewart’s Ferry Pike exit off of Interstate 40. Schnelle spent five-and-a-half hours picking up broken bottles, car parts, fast food and several pieces of plastic.

Schnelle said she's used to cleaning up litter in her neighborhood. She has a neighborhood group on Wednesdays where she collects trash from Donelson, Hermitage and Old Hickory. Schnelle noted that some hot spots are constantly pummeled with trash — like Lebanon Pike, the Stones River bridge and Central Pike.

As a volunteer who takes pride in her neighborhood, Schnelle said it hurts to see. While she noted that it's difficult to enforce consequences for littering, uncovered trucks contribute to trash in the neighborhood. Reporting them to the litter hotline, she said, could help make a difference.

“If you see somebody littering, report them. I think it would be kind of humiliating to receive a letter from the State of Tennessee that you were observed littering and you receive a car litter bag in the mail,” Schnelle said. “I think that could be effective.”

Schnelle also said she hopes businesses in the area would consider keeping a trashcan nearby to help the community stay trash free. She encouraged volunteers to ask for beautification supplies from their commissioners so they can help keep the community clean.
