Description
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — According to the American College of Sports Medicine, Nashville is among the least fit of the 100 largest cities in the United States.
Every year, the ACSM measures how well the 100 biggest cities in the U.S. support healthy, active lifestyles. As part of the score, the organization looks at factors like the percentage of days with good air quality, the level of food insecurity within a city, walkability and bikeability, and proximity to parks.
This year, Nashville came in at 71 out of 100, which represents a fall from 67 the year prior. The ACSM also found:
- 30.6% of residents have high blood pressure
- 27.9% meet aerobic & strength activity guidelines. The ACSM and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week and twice-weekly muscle-strengthening activities.
- 26.5% eat two or more fruits every day and 14.7% eat three or more vegetables each day
- 2.5% of residents walk or bike to work
- 1.8% use public transportation to get to work
"To make our communities healthy and strong, we need to continue advocating for changes that support physical activity," the report reads, in part. "...We all have a part in ensuring fair access to opportunities to live healthy lifestyles, including both physical and mental health."
