PORTLAND, Tenn. (WKRN) -- A convicted child rapist is back behind bars in Sumner County after an alert member of the Portland Police Department recognized the man from high school.
On June 11, authorities pulled over a vehicle driven by the registered sex offender. Body camera footage shows what happened after Officer Hunter Engel stopped 21-year-old Carlos Douglas Aldridge.
"The reason I pulled you over today is I recognized you as a wanted person for violation of probation," the officer said.
Portland Police Chief Jason Arnold told News 2 the young officer knew of the pending warrants for a man who went to his high school.
"They went to school together, Greenbrier High School, years ago, and he knew of him. I don't think they were in the same grade, but he knew of who he was, his history, what he did sex offense wise; went out looking for him, knew he had a warrant, so ended up finding him," Arnold explained.
According to court documents, a jury returned a five-count indictment against Aldridge for sex crimes against children in 2021, when he was 18 years old.
"He was convicted of two counts of statutory rape and, I believe, attempted aggravated sexual battery. I believe the victims were 12 and 13 years old," Arnold said, adding that Aldridge was on probation and on the sex offender registry for those crimes.
"Carlos Aldridge has not served time in a Tennessee state prison," stated Bradley Canada, public information officer for the Tennessee Department of Correction. "He received concurrent state probation sentences for sex offenses in Sumner and Robertson Counties, including one year of local jail time before starting probation on February 15, 2023."
Police told News 2 that Alridge violated probation when he was arrested last month for aggravated domestic assault.
"He picks up another charge while he's on probation for an aggravated domestic assault on his ex-girlfriend, and that's what led to the probation violation, which we knew he was wanted for on that evening of the traffic stop," Arnold explained.
"You have one warrant out of Sumner County and one out of Robertson County," the Portland officer told Aldridge in the body cam footage.
"Officer Engel does a very wonderful job, very proactive, and he just goes out every night and searches for people like this that need to be taken into custody," Arnold said.
According to the Sumner County Sheriff's Office, Aldridge is being held on a $10,000 bond for violation of probation, violation of the sex offender registry, and having no insurance.
