WILSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — “People are living in fear," according to a Wilson County commissioner, because of an apartment complex.
Glenn Denton, District 20 commissioner, told county commissioners Monday night that Ironwood Apartment Homes has a high volume of crime and police activity. “There are police calls, fire calls, and ambulance calls. We've had several shootings."
Denton lives right next door to the Ironwood Apartment Homes off Rome Pike. “People are living in fear, and I control my yard like a security guard,” Denton said.
Denton said after the complex opened a few years ago, the apartment started accepting Section 8 vouchers, and since then, he said crime has increased.
"When it opened two years ago, it's been one thing after the other...I don’t even need to see the call volume sheet because I see the lights every day myself,” Denton said.
On Monday night, Denton brought his constituents' concerns to county commissioners. Denton’s entire district is in the city of Lebanon, so he said it's up to the city to address the issues. "We have created a situation that should have never happened because it has happened now, we got to police, serve it, and fear it."
He said crime isn't the only concern on this road; he pointed to traffic and infrastructure. “The traffic problems have become immeasurable really here, and they are seemingly ignoring when we plan."
He said he’s concerned about the future of development in his district and how and where the city continues to build. "When you produce something, I think it's your responsibility to make sure you take care of it, and the city produced this and allowed it to happen."
News 2 reached out to the regional manager for the Ironwood apartment homes, and this was their response:
“We are aware of the concerns raised regarding crime trends in Lebanon, TN. At Ironwood Apartments, the safety and well-being of our residents is our highest priority.Â
We are working with local law enforcement on ways to increase our community’s safety. We are committed to promptly addressing any issues that are brought to our attention.Â
As Lebanon continues to grow, we recognize the increasing demands placed on our local law enforcement. We appreciate the efforts of the police department and are committed to working cooperatively with them to support a safe community.”Â
