SMYRNA, Tenn. (WKRN) — A new attraction is coming to one park in Rutherford County. Cedar Stone Park is opening its brand-new tennis and pickleball Courts..

Six new tennis and pickleball courts will be added to the park for residents and guest to enjoy. The Town of Smyrna and TDEC funded these courts through a Local Parks and Recreation Fund (LPRF) matching grant.

Park leaders say they are excited to see the plans for the new courts come to reality. After purchasing 80 acres of land from the school board back in 2007, they knew it could be a good place for a community park. Phase one of the park opened back in June of 2020 with ball fields, restrooms and playgrounds.

Director of Parks in Smyrna, Mike Moss, said he hopes the new courts will be an oasis for visitors to come out and enjoy.

"That's really the only major park out in that area, I call it the oasis of that side of town," Moss said. "Everybody who lives out there has a place to go. Hopefully they'll meet some of their health and wellness needs by going to that park."

Park leaders are currently budgeting for phase two, which includes building four new baseball fields, youth baseball fields, concession stands, restrooms, new walking and trail areas, additional parking and infrastructure. Moss said they want to make sure they afford what they plan to build with support from leadership and grants from the state.

"Its a big undertaking and the town is taking a big step in working on this," Moss says. "We want to work on infrastructure and give baseball a home here."

The grand opening for the new courts is on July 1 at 4 p.m. at Cedar Stone Park. An alternative rain date is scheduled for July 2.
