NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A woman is facing multiple charges after police said she drove under the influence and crashed into a home, fence and business in East Nashville before trying to run from the scene twice.

The incident reportedly took place Monday night along Douglas Avenue.

Sarah Harrison, who rents a home on the street, said she was about to go to bed when she heard a loud crash outside her window.

“I had no idea what it was. I thought it was either a tornado or loud thunder,” Harrison said. “There is a Suburban just right in the middle of my backyard. The airbags were all deployed.”

Harrison said she immediately called the police, but she and other neighbors tried to help the driver before officers arrived.

“She was very hysterical, understandably,” Harrison told News 2. “I think the reports have come out that she was under the influence, but also with the impact and just the shock of everything.”

Police said the driver—identified as 37-year-old Zanell Brown—first crashed into an air conditioning unit, then a fence, and finally a fire hydrant. She allegedly got out of the vehicle and ran before neighbors convinced her to return to the SUV.

According to Harrison, Brown then got back inside, started the engine, and drove through the fence again, this time crashing into a brick wall in an alley.

Officers said they found marijuana and rolling papers inside Brown’s vehicle. She was arrested and taken to the hospital before being booked into jail.

Brown is charged with DUI, drug possession, evading arrest, and leaving the scene of a crash.

Harrison said she is thankful no one was walking on the sidewalk during the second crash.

“The possibility of us being on the sidewalk and having that second crash, hitting someone, and making the situation far worse was quite shocking,” she said.

Neighbors say speeding is a long-standing problem on Douglas Avenue. Harrison hopes this crash is a wake-up call.

“You can’t stop drunk driving, but is there anything that can be done, right?” she said. “More stop signs might make people slow down.”
