NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Following the United States missile strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities Saturday, “Run For Their Lives Nashville” cancelled their walk Sunday, June 22. “Run For Their Lives Nashville” has completed weekly walks since the October 7th attack on Israel to advocate for the release of Israeli hostages.
While the organization told News 2 they haven’t received any direct threats, Run For Their Lives co-lead Tonya Bennett says the event was called off “out of an abundance of caution.”
In a Facebook post, the Jewish Federation of Greater Nashville wrote in part, “Due to the recent strategic strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites and the potential for heightened regional tensions, we’ve decided to cancel this week’s walk (June 22nd)."
In an interview with News 2, Vanderbilt University Professor of History Thomas Schwartz called the strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities an important moment in recent history, since the United States has been concerned for more than 20 years about the possibility of Iran acquiring a nuclear weapon.

Schwartz told News 2 there are a multitude of options for the Iranians to retaliate. The United States Department of Homeland Security also issued a worldwide caution alert, advising U.S. citizens worldwide to “exercise increased caution.”
However, Dr. Schwartz says if Iran decides to retaliate against the U.S., the U.S. could respond and threaten the existence of the Iranian regime.
"One thing that history does tell us is that the Iranian leaders, one of their ultimate priorities is holding on to their regime. They don't want to lose their regime, and so they're going to have to make their decision with that consideration in mind,” Dr. Schwartz explained.
Dr. Schwartz also added Iranians could seek to close the Straits of Hormuz, which about 20% of the world’s oil goes through, which could send the price of oil up, which could undermine President Trump’s political support.
