Description

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WDKY) — Police in Lexington, Kentucky, are investigating after a Sunday afternoon shooting at a church that has left "multiple" people injured.

It happened just before 11:40 a.m. ET on Sunday, July 13, according to an announcement on X from Kentucky State Police (KSP). Authorities said the suspect shot a trooper before fleeing the scene.

The suspect "[ended] up at" the Richmond Road Baptist Church, where authorities said there were "multiple other victims."

Emergency medical crews were on scene. Police said the suspect, who has not been identified, is deceased.

Lexington police reportedly blocked off the area, directing traffic for the public's safety.

"Please follow all directions given by officers and use alternative routes," department officials wrote. "Officers will remain in the area until the investigation is complete."

Nexstar's WDKY has reached out to Lexington authorities to get more information, and law enforcement officials said updates will be given when they're available.

Shortly before 1 p.m. ET, Lexington's Blue Grass Airport reported that a law enforcement investigation was impacting a nearby road.

A crew with Nexstar's WDKY reported seeing agents with Kentucky State Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF), Fish and Wildlife Law Enforcement, and the Lexington Police Department on scene.

Flights were on schedule and operations were "continuing as usual," the airport said in a post to X. Arriving passengers were being guided to open parking.

It's unclear if that investigation is connected to the shooting at Richmond Road Baptist Church, which is about 16 miles away, but Governor Andy Beshear acknowledged "a series of incidents in Lexington around one suspect, including a trooper-involved shooting and an additional shooting at Richmond Road Baptist Church with multiple injuries" in a post to X shortly after 2 p.m. ET.
