Description

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The fire that severely damaged Granite City Food and Brewery in Franklin is believed to have started after combustible mulch in a landscaping bed ignited, according to the fire marshal's office.

In the morning hours of July 5, the fire was reported at the restaurant on McEwen Drive, which is connected to Drury Inn.

Guests and staff of the 11-story hotel were evacuated while crews worked for hours to extinguish the blaze. Officials said two hotel guests were transported to an area hospital, and one staff member was treated on scene and released.

According to Franklin Fire Marshal Andy King, an unknown source ignited the mulch in a landscaping bed beside the building, and the fire spread to structural framing behind the exterior wall's stone façade. Officials said the fire spread upwards through the wall and onto the roof.

Authorities said the restaurant's use of combustible mulch directly beside the structure was a violation of Franklin fire safety regulations, which require the material to be placed two feet from commercial buildings unless the structure is made from fire resistant materials.

The restaurant was significantly damaged. However, the fire did not reach the hotel. The total damage, including the cost of business interruption, is estimated to be about $1.3 million.
