NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) -- A 15-year-old girl is in critical but stable condition at a Nashville hospital -- where her baby was delivered prematurely -- after she was shot during what 17-year-old boyfriend described as a struggle over his gun, according to law enforcement.
The Metro Nashville Police Department announced on Sunday, Nov. 2 that the girl's sister and cousin brought her to TriStar Skyline Medical Center around 11:45 a.m. before she was transferred to Vanderbilt. The victim was about 30 weeks pregnant, but the child was successfully delivered at Vanderbilt.
Authorities said they learned the 15-year-old was in her N. Dupont Avenue apartment bedroom with her boyfriend when the shooting occurred, so they identified and contacted him. The 17-year-old met with detectives at Vanderbilt.
According to officials, the boyfriend said the victim became upset because another girl had messaged him, they got into an argument, and she retrieved a pistol from his jacket. The 17-year-old told law enforcement his girlfriend was waving the gun around, so he grabbed it to take it away from her. However, the gun reportedly fired during the struggle, hitting the victim in the chest.
Police said the boyfriend told them what he did with the gun, which has since been recovered.
Authorities said the 17-year-old is being charged at Juvenile Court Sunday night with evidence tampering and unlawful gun possession by a minor. Additional charges are pending discussion with the District Attorney's Office.
No additional details have been released about this incident.
