Description

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A man has been indicted in connection with a deadly shooting from last July, according to the Metro Nashville Police Department.

According to a Friday, June 27 news release from MNPD, the Davidson County Grand Jury indicted 21-year-old James E. Johnson on a first-degree murder charge.

Police said the department's crime lab scientists conducted evidence analysis that strongly contributed to Johnson's identification.

According to MNPD, officers responded just before 8 a.m. on July 27, 2024, to a reported vehicle crash at Whispering Oaks Apartments off Harding Place.

On the scene, officers found 41-year-old Marcus D. Martin dead at the wheel of a Nissan Altima with a gunshot wound, police said.

Investigators said Martin lived at the apartment complex and left his apartment to go to the store. A motive for Martin's murder has not been determined, but authorities believe robbery is a possibility.

Johnson was already in custody upon his indictment for attempted criminal homicide charges in two separate cases, according to MNPD.

Police said Johnson was arrested the day after the murder for shooting his brother at an apartment complex on Old Hickory Boulevard in Hermitage.

Johnson was still in jail in August 2024, when he was charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault for ramming his SUV into another vehicle on I-40 near the Briley Parkway interchange in February 2023, authorities said. The incident resulted in a crash, and Johnson allegedly fired shots into the other vehicle, injuring a passenger, before speeding off.

According to MNPD, Johnson's bond has been set at $5 million for the murder charge.
