HERMITAGE, Tenn. (WKRN) — An empty Hermitage chapel could get a new life as a space that you and your pup will enjoy.
The Dodson Chapel United Methodist Church site has sat empty since devastating tornadoes in 2020, but Metro Councilmember Jordan Huffman has plans to turn the site into a dog park.
Huffman has proposed to clear the land and make it a public dog park with different sections for large and small dogs. The dog park would also trees and wildflowers native to Middle Tennessee for both aesthetics and stormwater management.
Huffman said this location is central to a lot of popular places in the Hermitage area, and would even be walkable for some.
"We feel very good about the plan—that it's a good add for the community. It has a lot of green space and [it's] just another amenity," Huffman said. "It's right around the corner from the community center, police station, and library area, which I affectionately call the 'Downtown Hermitage' area. You're going to be able to walk directly to the dog park."
The Metro Planning Commission would have to approve a zoning change for this plan to happen. Huffman said they plan to discuss the proposal in June.
