SUMNER COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — A man barricaded himself inside a Sumner County residence with a 1-year-old child earlier this week, according to a press release from the sheriff's office.
The Sumner County Sheriff's Office said that on Monday, deputies responded to a northern Sumner County home to investigate a report of inappropriate contact with a juvenile. The suspect, Walter Lewis, locked himself in a bathroom with his 1-year-old child and told family members that "they would never see him or the child again."
When deputies tried to intervene, Lewis allegedly emerged from the bathroom with "a large knife" before making suicidal threats and "took an aggressive stance toward deputies," the Sumner County Sheriff's Office said. Deputies then used "less-lethal force and eventually chemical munitions" to take Lewis into custody. The child was not physically harmed.
Lewis was transported to Skyline Medical Center via LifeFlight for treatment of self-inflicted wounds, the Sumner County Sheriff's Department added.
"The heroism and restraint our deputies showed in the face of a life-threatening crisis is nothing short of extraordinary," Sheriff Eric Craddock said in a Thursday press release. Their ability to remain calm, rely on their training, and prioritize the safety of an innocent child speaks volumes about their dedication to protecting this community. I could not be more proud of their courage and professionalism."
