NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A proposal before Nashville's Metro Council could prohibit truck parking on neighborhood streets.

The ordinance, proposed by Council Member Tasha Ellis, would expand parking regulations to include box trucks, food truck, food trailers an semi-trailers.

The new law would lower the weight limit from 18,000 pounds to 10,000 pounds. It would replace the current overnight parking ban with a two-hour limit at all times of day for heavy trucks, tanker trucks and dump trucks.

Council Member Ellis said the proposal is based on community feedback, and will help reduce dangerous obstructions while supporting safety for drivers and pedestrians.

But, Ellis said it still allows for the loading and unloading of trucks and permitted food vendors.

Ellis said the ordinance supports the current requirement of keeping 12 feet of roadway clear for vehicles and emergency access.

"Unfortunately, right now, we have large trucks, box trucks, food trucks, food trailers, and sometimes the semi trailers that park in the right of ways, and they block lanes for traffic, and that's just unsafe for, you know, someone to try to pass, you know, ongoing traffic to get around it," explained Ellis.

Ellis claimed she has worked with residents who own trucks or trailers to come up with a parking solution that works for them.

This bill was deferred once for some adjustments and is on the agenda for tonight.
