MADISON, Tenn. (WKRN) — A newer development in Madison is partnering with the city to add more green space for those living in the area.
According to Metro Parks officials, a Madison apartment development by Greystar is working with Nashville to make an in-kind donation of a new dog park and playground to the city.
As part of its ongoing construction of the Birchway Apartments, located at the corner of One Mile Parkway and Connare Drive next to the Lowe's home improvement store off Gallatin Pike, Greystar Communities will construct the dog park and playground for use by the general public.
A Metro Parks spokesperson told News 2 the maintenance of the park will be a partnership between the property owner and Metro Parks.
"We are currently in the final process of getting approval for the land transfer," according to Community Affairs Superintendent Jackie Jones. "Once this is completed [the] park will be able to be opened."
The park will be named One Mile Park, a reference to the road it will be on.
According to Matt Evans, Senior Director of Development for Greystar in Nashville, the adjacent apartment development, Birchway Rivergate, wanted to include a public space as part of its investment in the community.
"Birchway Rivergate is really proud to be able to donate a new public park to Metro Nashville," Evans told News 2. "We believe that communities really thrive when they have access to green space, and this park gives neighbors a place to gather, a place to unwind, a place to just enjoy the outdoors together."
The full park will include the dog park, a children's playground and an open lawn area, Evans said.
In order to deliver the park project, Evans said Greystar "really partnered with the neighborhood" in order to provide the area something the residents wanted to see in their community. Those discussions began "as far back as 2020," according to Evans.
"The park was really the result of those conversations," he said. "We really wanted input from those neighboring single-family homes and residents that live nearby."
Ultimately, Evans said Greystar's plan was not simply to provide a living space for people in the Madison area, but also to invest in the future of the community, and donating the park was the perfect way to do that.
The park construction is fully completed, according to Evans, and all that remains are a few administrative hurdles, including a couple more readings before the Metro Council. If all goes well, the park should be open by about mid- to late-June, he said.
"We're really excited to see this park become a vibrant and cherished part of the wider community," Evans said.
