NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A quirky tradition is coming back to a neighborhood with a rich history.
Porch parties are returning to Lockeland Springs to help new and old residents meet their neighbors.
Lockeland Springs residents use their porches as connecting points. The event started a couple of years ago, when the Lockeland Springs Neighborhood Association was looking for ideas to raise money to give back to the community.
Lockeland Springs Neighborhood Association Treasurer Millie Parkes said residents can stop by a different house in the neighborhood on a Sunday afternoon and meet each other.
“It really has evolved," Parkes said. "One of the things that’s been neat is we try to scatter them throughout Lockeland Springs, so the neighbors that show up, they get the word out to their friends and their street.”
The porch parties are normally hosted during the spring and fall. It’s no cost to residents or the porch parties hosts.
One of the things they’ve done recently is put up tents, which demonstrates to anyone walking by that the porch parties are a neighborhood event and not just a personal party. They also have a feather flag to signal anyone out and about in Lockeland Springs to come over to the party, and everyone is welcome.
Lockeland Springs Neighborhood Association President Elizabeth Smith said these porch parties have evolved into something bigger. It’s a way for newcomers to the neighborhood, walkers, bikers and visitors to share pieces of the neighborhood's history and learn where it all began.
“It’s nice to be able to call your neighbors when you need them or if you have a problem,” Smith said. "And you kinda get to know everybody in a social setting first it makes it a little easier to do that.”
Residents are encouraged to bring their kids and snacks to the event. Lockeland Springs’ next porch party will take place on Sept. 21 from 4 to 6 p.m.
