LEIPER'S FORK, Tenn. (WKRN) — Many people say they are motivated to take on the homesteading lifestyle in order to grow healthy food cultivated on their own land. News 2 talked with a real estate agent about what's driving this movement and how to find the ideal homestead.
"That's one of my favorites. Here's one growing right here," said Travis Robeson, as he shows us his vegetable garden.
Robeson calls himself a farm kid at heart.
"Peppers grow great out here in Tennessee. I gotta come out here every day and do some work. I prune these guys."
And the work isn't always easy. Nature doesn't always do what you want it to do, but Travis says that he wouldn't have it any other way. His Leiper's Fork homestead is where he feels at home.
"I'm all about connecting with nature... just connecting with God on a deeper level. And I think nature - this is his creation. This is the place to do it for me. I can see that."
Robeson wants to help others launch their homestead journey. As an accredited land consultant and real estate agent with Fridrich & Clark Realty, he helps his clients find their ideal plot of land to homestead.
"They'll come to me with a list of things: we need this much pasture, we need this much hardwoods, it's gotta be this type of soil," said Robeson. "I think it's grown more popular. I do."
Homesteaders of America says homesteading really started growing during the pandemic. In fact, the group surveyed thousands of homesteaders, and the number one reason these folks made a conscious decision to start living off the land was for food security and healthier eating. Growing vegetables, herbs, canning and preserving are the three most popular homesteading activities.
"I got some cucumbers - these two are cucumbers. I like making pickles. I do a lot of canning."
Robeson offered a few tips if you're shopping for a homestead. First - test the soil to ensure it'll grow what you want it to grow. Second- find a secure water source, such as a well or spring, as many homesteaders don't want to use municipal water. And don't get just any real estate agent. Find someone who knows the land. And, lastly, look far out from the cities. As homesteading gets more popular, affordable farmland is getting harder to find.
"There's so much demand for 5 acres, it's near impossible to find it."
Many homesteaders also want to be far away from light and noise pollution. If that's what you are also looking for, Robeson recommends looking in counties like Giles and Perry.
