Description

LEBANON, Tenn. (WKRN) — One local police department is bringing back another way to patrol the city and protect the community.

The Lebanon Police Department is reintroducing bike patrols to its fleet.

The department previously had patrols like these but ended up taking a break from them.

Now that they have the resources to bring those patrols back, Lebanon officials said the bike patrol unit helps them engage the community in a different way by increasing patrol coverage for special events in the city.

The police department currently has two officers on the unit, and they're already trained to patrol the city's parks and walking trails. The officers engaged in a week long training including crowd management and bike maintenance.

Lebanon Public Information Officer Zach Patton said reintroducing the new patrol helps them engage more closely with the community and increase visibility in high traffic pedestrian areas around the city.

"Not only is this going to be a way for us to continue to engage with our community in a different way but also patrol some of the walking paths that a normal patrol car cannot access," Patton said.

Eventually, the department will add more officers to cover more parks and oversee the community.
