LA VERGNE, Tenn. (WKRN) — La Vergne police are seeing an uptick in car break-ins around the city, and it's forcing the department to get tougher on crime.
La Vergne Police Department Detective Nicholas Liedtke said the department is working to combat the issue.
"I think that's a current trend going around all over the United States; we're trying our best to crack down on it as much as we can," Liedtke said.
Just six months into the new year, the department is already seeing higher numbers than all of 2024. The city witnessed 44 vehicle burglaries last year compared to 52 this year. And 33 vehicle thefts happened in 2024 compared to the 46 so far in 2025.
Vehicle thefts and vehicle burglaries have increased over the last year. LVPD officials said they're trying to be more proactive by boosting their nightly patrols with their Operation Safe Streets initiative. They're also partnering with the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Rutherford and Sumner County to stop it from happening again.
"[It's] concerning because someone is taking their vehicle and then committing other crimes with said vehicle," Liedtke said. "We just want to put an end to it."
Oftentimes, police said victims of vehicle theft feel violated when something so personal to them is lost. So they try their best to support victims and keep residents safe in the community.

"We do our best to be as supportive as we can for everybody that's going through that situation, and we do our best to solve the crime at hand and hopefully get them their property back," Liedtke said.
La Vergne police put out a second Operation Safe Streets survey for residents who still have safety concerns in their area. They said residents' feedback helps shape their enforcement, visibility, and safety efforts in neighborhoods and high-traffic areas.
