CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — On Monday, 14 jurors were selected to hear a difficult case involving a Clarksville woman accused of starving her 13-year-old son to death.
In July of 2022, Kadaris Maddox, who suffered from cerebral palsy, was found unresponsive by police at their family home on Virginia Terrace. Former Clarksville Police Department detective Bryan Hughes described Kadaris’ muscle mass as nonexistent.
Kadaris’ mother, Cheyenne Maddox, told News 2 during a previous jailhouse interview that she believed Kadaris accidentally suffocated himself with a blanket.
However, an autopsy revealed Kadaris was just 35 pounds when he died, with the report blaming his death on malnutrition and calling the manner suspected homicide.
“I love my son very much, and I didn't hurt him," Cheyenne told News 2 in 2023. "It's not like I woke up one day and decided to give up on my son. I would never do that."
This week, Cheyenne will go before a Montgomery County jury, which will consider her first-degree murder charge. She also faces separate child abuse and neglect charges, after police removed five children from her home — children Cheyenne last told News 2 were in Department of Child Services custody, but she'd like to see them placed with relatives.
“The allegations that are being made are false, you know, I did not do what they said that I did to my son,” Cheyenne said. “I'm just a mom who loves her kids dearly; I'm just a mom that misses her kids, misses her son."
Opening arguments for the case will begin Tuesday morning.
