NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A Nashville jury convicted a man earlier this week for his connection to a 2020 shooting at a Donelson apartment complex that resulted in the death of a 29-year-old woman and left another man injured, officials said.
According to the Metro Nashville Police Department, officers responded to a shooting at Terrace Park Apartments on Dec. 21, 2020. When police arrived, they reportedly found 29-year-old Alexis Douglas and her boyfriend suffering from gunshot wounds.
Douglas, who had been shot multiple times, was pronounced dead, while her boyfriend was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center to be treated, investigators told News 2 in 2020.
On Aug. 24, 2021, authorities announced they had arrested James Ritenour—who was 27 years old at the time— at a home on Tucker Road for the shooting death of his ex-girlfriend, Alexis Douglas, in her Elm Hill Pike apartment.
Nearly five years after the deadly shooting, on Wednesday, May 14, the Nashville District Attorney's Office announced Ritenour had been found guilty of premeditated first-degree murder and premeditated attempted first-degree murder.
According the DA's office, the man injured in the 2020 shooting took the stand during trial and identified Ritenour as the shooter in the courtroom. Douglas's family was reportedly "overcome with emotion" following the verdict.
The first-degree premeditated murder charge carries an automatic life sentence, however, Ritenour still has a sentencing hearing scheduled in August for the attempted murder charge.
Ritenour, now 31 years old, will begin serving his life sentence immediately, added the DA's office.
