NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Nashville’s "Let Freedom Sing!" Fourth of July celebration is just one day away.

The company behind the display, LaFollette-based "Pyro Shows Inc." has been organizing the Music City show for more than two decades.

The Nashville show is their largest annual event and takes them nearly the entire year to prepare for. Naturally, they spare no expense.

“Nashville is shot in a different way because we’re shooting 48 shells every 15 seconds, pretty much. That’s just during the main body of the show,” said Jim Edwards, crew leader and show designer. “That’s ridiculous, the amount of fireworks we’re putting in the air in that amount of time.”

Here are some details of Nashville’s fireworks display that sets it apart from other shows:

  • 8-inch firework shells that travel 800 feet high and break with a diameter of nearly 800 feet. Over 250 8-inch shells will be used Friday night.
  • 1,000 floating flares and special “ghost shells”
  • 40,000 pounds of explosives and 200 miles of wire
  • Roughly 35,000 pounds of sand used to bury the 8-inch shells
  • 8 pyrotechnicians in a steel bunker, flipping the switches.

Come the end of the Fourth of July weekend, Pyro Shows will have put on over 730 fireworks shows across roughly 20 states and one other country.

For the show in Music City, the coordination is elevated further: their fireworks have to be synced to live music conducted by the Nashville Symphony.

“We go through the score and I say, ‘Okay, I want 15 second durations here, I want a cake here, I want an 8 to break here,’” Edwards explained. “So he marks his score, we put all the queue numbers through his sheet music [and we fire at the markers].”

Edwards is a veteran of the Nashville show. “Ridiculous” and “insanity” is how he could best describe their aerial display.

“We always have new products,” said Edwards. “There’s always fan favorites. People love happy faces and heart patterns and star patterns, so you’ll see those in the show. You will not see a finale that will rival this thing, anywhere.”

“The sound of the applause at the end of the show is almost worth what we’re getting paid,” Edwards continued. “I mean, I would almost take that in payment. It’s such a feeling to hear that crowd, hundreds of thousands of people, and saying ‘We just did that.’”
