NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — At Belle Meade Historic Site, homeschool students are not just reading about history.
The Homeschool History Club serves nearly 100 students from kindergarten through high school, while blending traditional curriculum with immersive, active learning.
"What better place to learn history than if you're in an 1890 Carriage House just literally surrounded by history?" asked Deb Rittle, Education Lead at Belle Meade Historic Site
From molding clay marbles to exploring 19th-century stables, this approach keeps students engaged.
“It gives our brains a chance to learn how to make the things they would have made back in the old centuries,” explained eighth grader Ily Davis.
Educators believe programs like this give homeschool families the same social and creative opportunities kids get in traditional school, just in a different way.
“I only really meet friends from either my neighborhood or from these different things I go to. So, like, I would have never met Ily if it wasn’t for Belle Meade,” said seventh grader Ansley White.
Students said field trips, museum days, and hands on clubs are all made possible because of the flexibility of their homeschool schedule.
Many students make the most of that flexibility to work ahead and chase their passions.
"I've done sixth grade over the summer, and then I've just kind of gone with the flow and just done curriculums all year round," said Ily. “I’m a competitive figure skater, so it helps my schedule be super flexible. If I have a lesson at two o’clock, I get to work my schoolwork around it.”
These students are doing it all in a way that meets their needs and without sacrificing their studies.
