FAIRVIEW, Tenn. (WKRN) — News 2 saw dash cam video of a standoff in Fairview after a man allegedly pulled a gun on a deputy; it's the third time in just two weeks that an officer in Middle Tennessee has had a weapon pulled on them.

Around 6:30 Wednesday night in Fairview, a Williamson County deputy responded to a routine domestic disturbance call. However, it escalated into a standoff after 50-year-old Robert Sorell allegedly pulled a weapon on the deputy.

"The lady approached him [and] was trying to explain to him what was going on," Williamson County Sheriff Jeff Hughes said. "The suspect in the vehicle, later identified as Mr. Sorell, tried to leave the scene in his vehicle. Deputy Ball stepped in front of the vehicle, and the driver actually hit him."

At that point, the deputy ran to the driver's side, yelling "Get out of the truck!" In response, deputies said Sorell pulled out a gun.

"In a split second, he could have pulled the trigger and shot my deputy at close range," Hughes said.

The deputy retreated and worked to deescalate the situation. Twelve minutes later, Sorell surrendered.

"If you find yourself in a situation where it's a shoot-don't-shoot situation, you don't have time to think," Hughes said. "You have to resort to your training."

Sorell faces multiple charges — including aggravated assault and assault on a public servant — with a bond set at $83,000.50. The Williamson County Sheriff told News 2 that this incident could have turned deadly fast without the deputy's training.

This marks the third time in two weeks that a gun was pulled on an officer after deadly encounters in Davidson and Maury Counties.

With a key budget meeting scheduled Friday, Hughes said he plans to push for better pay to boost morale and keep his deputies from leaving for other agencies.

"You have to prioritize where we spend our money, and I think public safety needs to be a priority," Hughes said.
