Description

LEBANON, Tenn. (WKRN) — It was an active spring when it comes to severe weather in Middle Tennessee.

Back in April, the National Weather Service confirmed that an EF-1 tornado touched down in Wilson County. Now, three months later, residents can apply for FEMA assistance.

“It was a serious storm,” Steven George, owner of Seven Cedars Farm and Butcher Block, told News 2 back in April.

A tornado tore through George's farm, which resulted in approximately $2 million in damages.

“We’ve been on this property nine years, and it took nine seconds to undo everything I've been working on for the last nine years,” he said.

George’s property saw some of the worst damage in the county at the time.

“We did initially 69 surveys and that was anything from inaccessible to completely destroyed,” Maegan Eldridge, PIO and administrative assistant for Wilson County EMA, said.

According to Eldridge, residents can apply for FEMA assistance at the Disaster Recovery Center in Lebanon at 945 E. Baddour Parkway, located inside the Wilson County Fairgrounds.

“FEMA is here to provide assistance from anywhere from home repair assistance, all the way up to childcare and everything in between; you got car rental, medical help, dental help,” Eldridge said.

On top of the assistance, WEMA has been working with various churches to make permanent storm shelters across the county. This past year, the county opened their first extreme weather emergency shelter during the winter storms.

“We do have two churches in Mt. Juliet that are on board. We are still working on one in Watertown, and we have the one here in Lebanon that we already have the storm shelters at," added Eldridge. "We are trying to get one or two in each city so no one has too far to go to get out of bad weather."
