NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — To combat rising traffic issues, one intersection in East Nashville will soon become a four-way stop.
The intersection of Woodland Avenue and S 6th Street will have new stop signs installed along Woodland, after the Metro Traffic and Parking Commission approved a new stop control proposal.
According to Metro Councilman Clay Capp, who represents District 6, that intersection was in need of traffic changes after a number of incidents.
"There is a significant crash history at that intersection, unfortunately, so there was a community need there raised by the community," he told News 2.
The traffic and parking commission addressed the issue after residents in the area and other community members raised it.
"They generally don't approve a four-way stop without a meaningful crash history, and this location had one, unfortunately, so I'm really glad to see that four-way stop going in," Capp said.
Between the East Park and the East Park Community Center, Capp said there was enough traffic in and around the area to warrant the need for the stop, he added.
Now that the Metro Traffic & Parking Commission has approved it, all that remains is for NDOT to install the two new stop signs on Woodland Avenue, which Capp said should happen "pretty quickly."
Capp told News 2 he's hopeful the new stop signs will help address crash issues, speeding, and even pedestrian safety.
"That's always top of mind, so that should be helpful there as well," he said.
While there are no official lines painted at the intersection, Capp said he would follow up with NDOT to see about adding a marked crosswalk at the crossroads now that it will be a four-way-stop.
"We've got to work on safety, and pedestrian safety in particular," he told News 2.
