RIDGETOP, Tenn. (WKRN) — The Smiley’s were among the first to settle in Ridgetop, Tennessee. Since 1805, they’ve cultivated farm fresh produce.
In the 1940s, farmer Troy Smiley said his family began selling their products at farmers markets.
“What we are known for is turnip greens,” explained Smiley.
Smiley Produce has farmland throughout Ridgetop, but their market sits on US Highway 41. They also have a permanent stand at the Nashville Farmers Market.
“Never a boring day at the market,” said Smiley.
Troy Smiley said no day looks the same.
“Some days you’re breaking ground, some days you're planting,” said Smiley. “Some days you’re delivering product.”
He said the Ridgetop community is steadfast and he’s always enjoyed traveling to Nashville
As the metro area grows, Smiley said they’ve received more and more offers to build on their land, but they’re holding on to it.
“I’m too hard headed not to quit,” said Smiley.
Smiley hopes folks will continue supporting local farmers, whether in Ridgetop or beyond.
