NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — You often see turtle nest protection cages built for sea turtles along the beach, but what about in Nashville?
Recently, a group of friends took it upon themselves to build one for a box turtle in Shelby Park.
Alexandria Gateley Griffin lives in East Nashville and was letting her dog play in the Shelby Park dog park when her pup drew her attention to the turtle.
Griffin quickly realized the turtle was actively laying eggs. She knew she had to do something to make sure the mom and her babies were protected.
Griffin and one of her friends built an enclosure to warn people about the turtle and her eggs.
Soon, other people in the park also started joining in on the effort.
Griffin said she felt such a sense of pride that her neighbors pitched in to help.
"It just shows you what the East Nashville community can do when we all work together," she told News 2. "It was very heartwarming for everybody. We all felt a sense of community right then and there."
Griffin said they called a few wildlife rescue groups to help the turtle, and a group called Walden's Puddle has since come to help rescue the turtle and her babies.
