CHEATHAM COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — The Cheatham County Sheriff's Office absconder unit has been so successful in tracking down wanted offenders that they've added two more officers to the squad that was previously a team of one.
In just a few months since its inception, the absconder unit has arrested 65 wanted individuals who might otherwise still be at large.
According to authorities, the unit teamed up with Metro police Friday afternoon to arrest Brian Garrett, also known as "8-Ball."
Bodycam video obtained by News 2 shows the moment officers cuffed the 50-year-old ex-con.
Records reveal that Garrett has spent much of his life in and out of jail. According to the Tennessee Department of Correction, Garrett's most recent sentence was a six-year term for aggravated assault out of Cheatham County. The sentenced reportedly expired on Jan. 5, 2024.
Garrett's previous convictions in Tennessee includes:
- Aggravated assault (Cheatham County): Six-year sentence, expired Sept. 16, 2008
- Evading arrest (Cheatham County): Three-year sentence, expired April 2, 2003
- Forgery (Cheatham County): Two-year sentence, expired on March 1, 2000.
- Forgery (Cheatham County): Two-year sentence expired Nov. 25, 2001
- Theft of property (Davidson County): Eight-year sentence expired Oct. 2, 2016
- Forgery (Davidson County): One-year sentence expired Sept. 17, 2010
In 2017, News 2 reported on Garrett's arrest after he allegedly placed a knife at a woman's throat. He was taken into custody for that incident and served time.
While investigating Garrett's case, members of the absconder unit reportedly received a lead about Dresden Hollars, another man they were looking for.
Deputies reportedly found an ID card that had Hollars' name on it at the location where they arrested Garrett.
In 2022, Hollars, who was the target of a manhunt, was taken into custody after he was found hiding in a shed with a 2-year-old child. At the time of his arrest, deputies said Hollars used the child as a "human shield" during the dramatic arrest, which was caught on video.
After Friday's successful arrest of Garrett, Cheatham County deputies thanked Metro officers for assisting them.
"I think we are batting 100% with you all, we love working with you guys," one officer could be heard telling the absconder unit on bodycam video.
Garret is currently being held in jail without bond. Deputies told News 2 that the absconder team is now looking for Hollars for a parole violation.
