WHITE BLUFF, Tenn. (WKRN) — Farming isn't easy, especially when you decide to grow something new. One Dickson County farmer gave up raising goats for growing flowers.

"This is our rudbeckia — it's one of my favorite flowers here," explained Chris Christy, owner of The Farm at Westview.

Chris Christy has lived on the land his entire life, but growing flowers on that land is entirely new for him.

"Want to have something that our community can enjoy and that we can enjoy as a family," said Christy.

When Christy's dad, Larry Christy, passed away a few years ago, the family decided to turn his farmland into something special, and a flower farm seemed fitting.

"And then you can walk right in. Help yourself," said Christy while walking to his flower beds.

Some flowers, the marigolds, certainly gave him some surprises along the way.

"Don't know how I would know, but they smell almost identical to marijuana," said Christy jokingly as he was pointing to the marigolds. "I had no idea."

Christy planted dozens of flowers over this quarter acre of land, and he can name all his "babies."

"Much like a snowflake, they are all unique. I have sat at and stared at every individual petal on a flower. I have seen the joy that it brings to people."

He has also experienced the heartache of running a new business. In the heat of sumer when the farm wasn't getting much rain, his water bill tripled in price and he had to stop irrigating.

"That type of expense was not sustainable over time."

Some flowers didn't survive, but fortunately many did. And Christy sells his beautiful flower arrangements out of a quaint roadside hut, just feet from where they are grown. The hut has a variety of beautiful arrangements starting at $6.

"We have sold vases in old antique bottles that has a nostalgic feel to it."

He also branched out from flowers, selling homemade canned goods — jelly, hot sauce and pickles.

"We actually have a hard time keeping up with the demand of our home canned items... That is a good problem to have."

Christy has big dreams for the flower farm and what it could mean to future generations in Dickson County.

"I think my dad would be elated. My dad was one of my biggest cheerleaders. The many things I ventured out to do, he's always been my number one supporter,"

The Farm at Westview is closed for the season. They will start growing new flowers in April, and open in June.
