NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — When News 2's Weather Authority meteorologists are covering a tornado warning, you have likely heard them advising folks to get to the lowest level of their home and away from exterior walls and windows. However, what should you do if you live an apartment building or high-rise?
Nashville has new apartment buildings and high-rises being built every day. In fact, a large part of the city's population lives in those types of buildings, so where are they supposed to shelter during a tornado warning?
If you live in a multi-story apartment building, you are supposed to do the same thing as you would if you were in a house: get to the lowest level of the building away from exterior walls and windows.
According to the City of Nashville, if you find yourself in an office building, hospital, nursing home, or skyscraper during a tornado warning, you should take the following precautions:
- Go directly to an enclosed, windowless area in the center of the building on the lowest floor possible.
- Crouch down and cover your head.
- Stay off elevators. Officials added interior stairwells are usually good places to take shelter, and if not crowded, allow you to get to a lower level quickly.
Many tall buildings in Nashville have basements and underground parking garages; going underground is always going to be the safest.

If your apartment building has a storm shelter, that would be the safest location. To put it simply, the lower you go and the further from exterior walls and windows you are, the safer you will be.
