NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — One West Nashville neighborhood is pushing back against development in order to protect the nature of their community.
West Meade, just 20 minutes away from downtown Nashville, is an escape from the business of Nashville's urban core. It's known for its large green spaces—especially the tree canopy.
However, Metro Councilmember Thom Druffel told News 2 the West Meade tree canopy has been threatened by development.
According to Druffel, crews have been coming in to build more houses and will clear-cut a large amount of trees. This has ruffled a lot of feathers in the neighborhood, so neighbors have come together to save the trees.
Druffel said neighborhood advocates approached the developers with a simple ask: minimize tree removal as much as possible. It's a request that has worked so far, but Druffel said there's still more to be done to protect the trees, as West Meade could be rezoned to allow for more density.
"We have something pretty special," Druffel told News 2. "We just want people to appreciate what we have and why we're here and to recognize that we can't replace what they're tearing down."
Druffel is holding a community meeting tonight at 6 p.m. at Brook Hollow Baptist Church to discuss the proposed neighborhood rezoning and get feedback from residents to present to the planning commission.
