Description
CHEATHAM COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — A new warrants unit at the Cheatham County Sheriff's Office has arrested approximately 20 absconders since being formed just over a month ago.
Officials said the unit's latest arrest was the result of a joint effort with a local bail bond agency.
The suspect—identified as 37-year-old Dallas Harshaw of Greenbrier—is reportedly an ex-con with a long history of drug use and sales.
According to the Tennessee Department of Correction, Harshaw was convicted of possession of meth with intent to manufacture/deliver/sell and possession of Schedule I drugs in 2018. Just a year later, he was sentenced to 8 years of probation.
Authorities said the 37-year-old missed a court appearance for a probation violation, which led to warrants for his arrest.
To track Harshaw, the Alpha Bail Agency reportedly teamed up with the new warrants unit at the sheriff's office.
The takedown took place on Saturday, July 12, at motel in Goodlettsville. Bodycam video obtained by News 2 shows bonding agents working with deputies to make the arrest.
According to Hank Salyer with Alpha Bail Agency, there were two small kids in the room and it was unclear if the 37-year-old was armed.
However, once inside the room, the bondsmen found Harshaw on the floor, where he then surrendered without incident.
After being brought downstairs, Ryan Hawkins with the CCSO Warrants Division documented the arrest.
News 2 spoke with Salyer to determine what the bondsmen can and can't do when it comes to arrests.
"I get to enforce a contract that the state of Tennessee says I can," said Salyer.
"So does that mean if I do something wrong, you can put hands on me if I don't come willingly?" asked News 2's Andy Cordan.
"Yes," replied Salyer.
Furthermore, Salyer stated the bondsmen went after Harshaw because he failed to go to court.
"We gave him an opportunity to be a man and come on his own and he chose to be a punk," said Salyer. "We gave him an opportunity, we called him, 'You have a problem, we need to fix this. Come in.' He chose the other direction."
In addition to the violation of probation warrant and failure to appear, Harshaw was charged with another felony after he allegedly brought fentanyl into the Cheatham County Jail, where he remains in custody.
