Description

SMYRNA, Tenn. (WKRN) — An annual race held in memory of a fallen pilot will return to a Smyrna park later this week.

The annual Top Gun Night Run 6K will return to the Town of Smyrna for its sixth year this Friday, Sept. 12, at 7:30 p.m. at Lee Victory Recreation Park.

Registration is open for the one-of-a-kind event honoring the life and legacy of Capt. Jeff Kuss, USMC.

Captain Kuss died while flying as Blue Angel #6 on June 2, 2016, during a training flight during the Great Tennessee Air Show. A husband and father of two, Kuss was only 32 years old at the time.

The 3.7-mile, chip timed, USATF-certified course offers participants a unique running experience through the Smyrna, Rutherford County airport and the Smyrna Municipal Golf Course, culminating at the Captain Jeff Kuss USMC Memorial.

Participation is limited to only 650 runners and walkers, so be sure to register early.

This year's race marks special significance for organizers, as it marks the 6th anniversary of the vent, reflecting Kuss's Blue Angels number, 6. All proceeds from the event benefit the Captain Jeff Kuss Memorial and the Capt. Jeff Kuss Scholarship, which supports three Smyrna seniors each year.

"The Top Gun Night Run continues to be one of Smyrna's most anticipated community traditions," Smyrna Mayor Mary Esther Reed said. "This year is especially meaningful as we celebrate our 6th run in honor of Captain Kuss's number 6. We look forward to welcoming families, runners, and spectators to enjoy a festive evening with live music, food trucks, and the inspiring beauty of the memorial at night."

Registration costs $50 per participant, which includes a commemorative T-shirt and a custom finisher medal. In-person registration takes place at the Smyrna Event Center at 100 Sam Ridley Parkway East. Online registration is also available live now at this link. Online registration closes at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10.
