NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Being a mom is never easy, especially when juggling school, work and little ones all at once. One Nashville mother shared the way that one community program helped her.
Bailey Laird told News 2 that she found out she was pregnant with her second child in the same month that she started a nine-month dental assistant program. She wasn't sure how she would make it through — until she found out about Nashville Strong Babies.
According to the organization's website, expectant parents are assigned care coordinators that plan one-on-one sessions at home or other locations. Those sessions will cover everything from mental health to building confidence about parenting skills.
Laird's care coordinator helped set her up with supplies, including diapers, a car seat, gift cards and even help finding daycare. The program helped her gain a real connection and supported her as she continued her education.
"It was more than just, 'Oh, we're going to help you. We're going to do this.' We actually have a bond and relationship," Laird said. "We can talk. We related on some levels that I wouldn't even have thought ... To get to number three — it's so crazy, but they make me feel like Superwoman."
The city said that in the six years since the program started, no participants have experienced infant or maternal deaths.
The program is getting a boost in next year's budget — to the tune of about $334,000 to expand services through the Health Department.
