Description
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) -- Tennessee Task Force 2 (TNTF2) left for Texas Saturday to help with flood response and recovery operations after last week's catastrophic weather.
According to the Associated Press, flash floods over the Fourth of July killed at least 120 people and left more than 170 missing in Central Texas.
The Nashville Fire Department said the task force was deployed as a result of a request from Texas officials and is a function of the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, a mutual aid agreement among U.S. states and territories allowing them to share resources during natural and man-made disasters.
TNTF2 will operate as a "Type 3 Urban Search and Rescue team," with swift water rescue capabilities, according to NFD. Team members will also help with cleanup efforts and support local agencies in communities impacted by the flooding.
The task force includes personnel from NFD, the Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure, the Williamson County Emergency Management Agency, the Brentwood Fire Department, the Hendersonville Fire Department, and the Franklin Fire Department.
Officials said TNTF2 deployed on Saturday, July 12 for the mission, which is expected to last up to 14 days, with staging operations just outside of Austin, Texas.
According to the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, the Memphis Fire Department's Canine Search Team-Human Remains Detection team from Tennessee Task Force 1 deployed to Kerr County, Texas, earlier this week.
"Please join us in wishing safe travels and a successful mission for all first responders and EMA personnel," TEMA wrote on social media.
