NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — An organization helping formerly incarcerated people get back on their feet broke ground on a new facility in Wedgewood Houston.

The Tennessee Prison Outreach Ministry broke ground on the expanded Morgan House Thursday, Aug. 14, along with community leaders, faith-based partners and state officials.

According to TPOM, the Morgan House is a transitional reentry home for women returning from incarceration. The facility serves as a "beacon of hope" for women seeking stability, healing and purpose after incarceration.

The new facility will increase the ministry's capacity, provide more individualized care and strengthen the efforts to reduce recidivism in Middle Tennessee, according to TPOM.

Development and Recruitment Specialist Mary McCrary said in a release the work at the Morgan House centers around providing safe housing, faith-based counseling, job readiness training, and community support to those in their care.

With limited transitional housing available for justice-impacted women, expansions like those at the Morgan House fill a "critical gap."

The name for the facility comes from a former neighbor of TPOM. In a previous interview, the organization told News 2 "Mrs. Morgan" was a beloved figure for the men in their program.

Initially reticent of a transitional program moving in next door to the home she'd had for years, Mrs. Morgan grew to love the men who came through TPOM. They formed lasting bonds that continued even after Morgan's passing in 2018.

When she died, Morgan left her home and its land to TPOM, according to McCrary, and that is why the new women’s facility bears her name: “in remembrance to her legacy.”
