Stray Bullet Kills Springfield Man in Winchester During July 4th Festivities
SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE, (Smokey Barn News) A Springfield man has died after police say he was struck by a stray bullet during 4th of July celebrations while in Winchester, Tennessee.
According to a release from the Winchester Police Department, on July 4, 2025, officers responded to a medical emergency involving a subject who had fallen on Twin Creeks Drive near River Watch Way. MAP Officers assisted during the incident and initially believed the individual had suffered a medical emergency.
In a statement released at 1:13 p.m. on Saturday, July 5, by the Winchester Police Department, the subject has been identified as John Cobb, age 61, of Springfield, Tennessee. During Mr. Cobb’s medical treatment, it was discovered he had been struck by what is believed to be a bullet, possibly from a rifle. Mr. Cobb has since passed away as a result of the incident.
Given witness testimony and preliminary findings, investigators believe the bullet may have been fired recklessly into the air and struck Mr. Cobb during its descent.
Authorities are asking anyone who may know of a rifle being fired into the air in or around the Winchester area between 9:10 p.m. and 9:25 p.m. on July 4 to contact Detective Ryan Fuller with the Winchester Police Department at 931-967-3840.
