MT. JULIET, Tenn. (WKRN) — Mt. Juliet city officials are asking drivers to take the road less traveled this weekend.
Crews will close part of North Mt. Juliet Road to fix a problem that motorists have called a nuisance for years. News 2 stopped by the road and heard the sound of vehicles hitting the railroad tracks.
"It's almost like you’re kind of hitting a pothole," Stone Fair, owner of Blended Nutrition in Mt. Juliet, said.
Fair just opened his business on North Mt. Juliet Road. He said cars brace for impact every day.
"You can get airborne with it and it can cause damage, and if people aren’t paying attention, they could lose control from the vehicles," Fair said.
"We're hoping that, come Tuesday morning, there's no more driving around the railroad tracks or bracing for impact, that it's just going to be smooth sailing," Justin Beasley, Mt. Juliet's communications director, said.
According to Beasley, the city made some adjustments to the road a few years ago, but it did not fix the biggest problem. Since the area is considered the center of Mt. Juliet, it’s well traveled.
"North of [22,000], 23,000 people travel that road daily, and that's probably just one way, so if you look at both ways, it's pretty significant," Beasley said.
Come this weekend, Mt. Juliet drivers will need to take alternate routes.
"General traffic will be detoured to Industrial Drive. Many people take that already to avoid the train tracks to begin with," Beasley said.
While Fair said this project is needed, it will impact his new business, which has an open house planned for Saturday, July 12.
"Where I would hope to have vehicles come through on both sides, now they're going to have to be rerouted around, and I could miss hundreds of people in just a short amount of time on a Saturday," Fair said.
The road closure starts at 8 p.m. on Friday, July 11 and lasts until Monday, July 14.
