SPRING HILL, Tenn. (WKRN) — This Saturday, the Spring Hill community is invited to celebrate a special birthday, as the Spring Hill Library turns 50 years old.

Friends and fans of the library and its services have been invited to celebrate the milestone birthday from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 3. According to the Friends of Spring Hill Library group, the community room will be decorated for the birthday party — complete with a giant cake.

According to Lisa Arnwine, President of the Friends of Spring Hill Library, the library was founded in May 1975 by Pat Selle, who passed away in 2024.

"She was instrumental in getting the library started," Arnwine told News 2, adding the Friends have also been around almost that long as well. "...We've been helping the library since its inception in 1975."

The birthday cake will be a sizeable one, 3 feet by 6 feet, according to Arnwine, and will feature images of all the previous locations for the library over its 50-year history.

Past locations include the old Spring Hill African-American school, then it was moved to a building that now serves as a dry cleaner. After a brief stint in another smaller, now-abandoned location, Arnwine said the current home of the library building was originally built as a daycare center for employees at the Saturn plant when it opened in the community.

"We commonly refer to the library as 'Spring Hill's living room,' as over the past 50 years it has been a warm and inviting place for those in the City to gather and spend their free time," said Spring Hill Communications Director Lucas Wright. "We wouldn't have made it through the years without the dedicated employees, volunteers, and patrons that make up our amazing library community. We look forward to celebrating the milestone this weekend and eagerly await what the next fifty years will bring."

The birthday celebration for the library is also held in part alongside Spring Hill Founders Day, Arnwine said. On the Friday before the big birthday celebration, residents and visitors can attend several talks about the history of the library, its patrons, how it's grown through the years and even some artifacts to view.

Those talks will last all day on Friday, May 2, and friends can come celebrate the library's service to the community on Saturday.

Additionally, Arnwine said visitors at the birthday party can view the winners of an art contest for Spring Hill children. The children were asked to draw what they thought a brand new library would look like when it is completed, Arnwine said.

There are winners from five different age groups who will be recognized at the birthday celebration. All the children's artwork will be located in the teen section of the library, according to Arnwine.
