Description

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The clash of the airmasses is part of what makes the fall season so dynamic, and it will be noticeable this weekend into next week across Middle Tennessee. It starts with a risk of severe thunderstorms on Friday, followed by a mild and quieter Saturday. Then Sunday into Monday, a major blast of cold air, with the possibility of snow flurries early next week and a high chance of below freezing temperatures for multiple nights/early mornings.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed all of Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky in a risk. The highest level is a Slight Risk (level 2/5) and includes most of our region. A Marginal Risk (level 1/5) for the far edges WKRN's viewing area.

The main storm threats appear to be wind gusts and isolated tornadoes. Secondary concerns will be brief heavy rain and hail. Storm timing is as early as Friday afternoon (mainly after dark), through 2 a.m. Saturday at the latest.

Friday morning begins with drier compared to what models showed earlier in the week. This means despite clouds, there will be some sunshine into the afternoon. Sunshine can destabilize the atmosphere (making it more prone to storms). After 3 p.m. Friday, the weather dynamics will increase, leading to storm development into the evening and ending early overnight. Severe storms will be possible with wind gusts the main concern, but there is turning wind with this system and that means isolated tornadoes could develop also.

Ahead and during the storms, gusts will approach 20-40 mph. This wind from the south and southwest during the day will help temperatures warm into the lower 70s. Rain amounts could reach up to one inch and isolated higher totals.

After the storms on Friday, calmer weather on Saturday with highs in the 60s to lower 70s. The next rain chance (small) will be late Saturday into early Sunday. The main focus is the cold front arriving into Sunday morning, and prepare for a BIG drop in temperatures. On Sunday, highs in the 40s to lower 50s and a blustery northwest wind 10-20 mph and gusts to 30 mph.

With this big blast of colder air, feels like temperatures are going to be even lower than the air temperatures. For Sunday afternoon, it will feel like the low 40s and 30s. By Monday morning, it will feel like the teens and 20s. And with clouds (and possible snow flurries) on Monday, the feels like temperatures for the afternoon are in the 20s to lower 30s.

The first taste of significant cold temperatures (feeling like winter) will be here early next week. Morning lows on Monday and Tuesday mornings will be below freezing with moderate temperatures by next Wednesday, Nov. 12.
