NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A sudden building closure from the Nashville Fire Marshal is leaving several businesses without a place to go.
The 100 Taylor Arts Market, located in Germantown, closed down with very little warning. The Nashville Fire Marshal put up a notice that the building is undergoing maintenance repairs for four to six weeks, leaving several tenants severely impacted.
Tenants like art gallery and design company owner Josh Snodgrass didn’t see it coming.
"I don’t think anybody right now is really sure of what caused it, and that is part of the issue, you know, honestly, is the lack of information," Snodgrass said.
Snodgrass' Visual Minds business is based in Germantown. Just a day before he received the notice, he immediately started searching for a new space to keep his business afloat.
Snodgrass said that while he’s able to work from home, several businesses rely on the space to bring in income. But the community has stepped up in a big way to help everyone involved.
“We are here for the whole Nashville art community, but especially the 100 Taylor community that’s obviously being affected by this,” Snodgrass said.
The Fire Marshal’s Office gave News 2 a statement:
The Fire Marshal’s Office does not issue stop work orders for minor infractions or for the purpose of closing businesses. These orders are only issued when critical safety violations are identified that pose a significant risk to life and property, while also limiting exposure and liability for ownership. In this case, our inspectors discovered multiple critical violations within the building. These violations present not only a serious safety concern for tenants and occupants, but also for anyone who enters the building—including first responders who may be called to respond there.
Our Fire Marshal’s Office is working closely with the responsible parties to ensure the necessary corrections are made. Once these violations are resolved, the building will not only be safe for occupancy but also brought into compliance with current fire and life safety codes.
In the meantime, Snodgrass is moving his business to another temporary location in the Capitol View area.
Community organizations are continuing to reach out to businesses that are affected to help them find a temporary home.
