MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WKRN) — City leaders in Murfreesboro celebrated the opening of a brand new transit center Thursday.

Located on New Salem Highway, the Murfreesboro Transit Center will better facilitate transportation in the booming city, according to city officials.

The city broke ground on the $17 million facility in 2023. The plans for the center included a 3,200 square-foot bus maintenance facility, a 2,375 square-foot passenger pavilion, and a new administration office building made possible through local, state and federal funding.

The IMPROVE Act provided $9 million for the project, while $5 million in federal dollars and $2.8 million in local matching funds funded the facility.

Included with the new facility is a partnership with WeGo Public Transit, which will be locating near the new center and "more effectively facilitate regional transportation."

With the new center open, Murfreesboro Transit's fleet of 12 buses, 18 drivers, and staff members will relocate from its current hub in downtown Murfreesboro.

Murfreesboro Mayor Shane McFarland and the city council were joined at the ribbon cutting Wednesday by Deputy Commissioner Preston Elliot with the Tennessee Department of Transportation, TDOT Assistant Bureau Chief of Planning Dan Pallme, Tennessee Public Transportation Association Executive Director Jason Spain, City Manager Darren Gore and city staff.
