NASHVILLE, Ten. (WKRN) — A good golf game is built from the top down.

“It’s not only an athletic sport, but it’s also a mental challenge," Wayne Evans of Metro Nashville Parks and Recreation said.

A good golf course is built from the ground up.

“The biggest difference is the greens have been improved vastly," golfer Nate Shuppert said.

In 2024, Shelby Golf Course in East Nashville underwent a $2 million makeover to improve the greens, tee boxes, and even the clubhouse.

“Putting some much-needed money into this course is going to benefit all the golfers that play here," Shuppert said.

The millions of dollars come second to the course’s 100-year history. Evans has been around for nearly half of that time.

“My favorite hole is, actually, number 16," Evans said. "We used to call it the railroad hole because it’s got the railroad tracks that go parallel down the left side.”

From tournaments to tornadoes, Evans has seen it all.

“There was one big difference that the course underwent after the tornado came through and took out the hundreds of trees and transformed it quite a bit," Evans said. "But then to look and see the improvements they made last year as part of the restoration project — it’s amazing to see how far it’s come in five years.”

While the greens may change, Shelby Golf Course will always be built on tradition.

“Not only can the golfers socialize after and before, but people in the neighborhood," Evans said. "There are people who come here just to hang out to see their friends. We find that to be true for a lot of our courses but particularly this one for this area.”
