NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — One of the city's more dangerous intersections will be the site of a "planning by-doing" tactical urbanism project next week.

According to Metro Councilwoman Emily Benedict, summer interns at the Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure have put together a "pop-up project" related to tactical urbanism at the end of McGavock Pike.

Tactical urbanism, according to Benedict, is an "action-oriented approach using temporary measures to quickly test solutions to roadway challenges in the public realm." Metro Nashville has been using the method sine 2012.

According to a Walk Audit conducted by the NDOT interns, the place where the sidewalk ends on McGavock Pike creates a confusing route for pedestrians and cyclists. Cars are able to fly through the intersection all while disregarding non-motorized users, Benedict said in a recent newsletter.

From July 7 through July 10, NDOT will have a temporary demonstration installed to get drivers to pay more attention in the area between Fernwood Drive and Riverwood Drive. During this time, traffic cones and signs will test a design that narrows the eastbound lane of McGavock Pike and creates a "protected space for people to walk, bike, and roll."

It will also close the slip lane from McGavock Pike to Riverwood Drive. The project, NDOT said, aims to make the corridor safer and more accessible for everyone.

While the slip lane is closed, the closure will not block access to Riverwood Drive, per NDOT. Vehicles will be able to use the cut through across from Ardee Avenue to access Riverwood Drive from McGavock Pike.

According to Benedict, all nearby property owners have been notified of the upcoming demonstration and have "no objection" to the short-term project.

There is also a survey on the project available for those who use the intersection regularly to take. You can fill out the survey online here.
