One man, one shop: The legend and lure of Bill's Tires in Dickson

Description

DICKSON, Tenn. (WKRN) — Right in the heart of Dickson is one of the county’s only tire shops.

Bill's Tire Service is a solo operation that's been open since 1989. The owner, Bill Littleton, is a local man whose personality and reputation now precede him. He's a Dickson County native, a man of strong faith, an avid turkey hunter, a tire expert and — obviously — a local celebrity.

With its rustic southern charm and overflowing green ivy, Littleton said his shop has been used in multiple country music videos, including for songs by Josh Turner and Trace Adkins.

"I'm unknown worldwide," Littleton told News 2.

Where he’s located has also grown to become a bustling stretch of Dickson, meaning his business sees far more traffic out front than in their early years.

What makes the whole operation go is Littleton, who is a true one-of-one.

“I know how to solve [al]most any problem with a tire. I can solve it. It’s therapeutic to me,” said Littleton. “If I do my best for every single person that comes in here, that’s all I can do — and my best is pretty good.”

Littleton is your quintessential handyman. Outside of being a master of tires, he also makes furniture, baskets, and turkey calls.  He's currently in the process of building himself a treehouse to live in deep in the woods.

“I just wanted to see if I could do it,” Littleton said, nonchalantly.

His tire shop has no website, no social media presence and no business number. Littleton himself does have a personal phone — two, actually. One is a flip phone, used for work, and the other is an iPhone he only uses to take pictures.

“There’re a few people who have my number — my other number, but I don’t stay on [my phone]. If you want to get me during the day, you call this right here,” Littleton said, holding up his flip phone.

He might be hard to reach, but it doesn’t matter. Littleton's an established presence. People know him, they trust him, and they always know where to find him. In fact, two women even spent a day painting Littleton's shop. He has both iterations hanging in his office.

That’s who Bill Littleton is: dedicated to his craft and his community.

“I want to be busy, but, I also want God to put people into my life,” Littleton said. “I want to be here for them, and [for them to] be here for me — to try to help. I mean, that’s what I’m about is helping. I want to make a living. I got to make a living. But I have this platform, also, to help, and that’s what makes coming here worthwhile.”

Bill’s Tires is open weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on E. College Street in Dickson.
